WHY IN THE NEWS?

Recently, the Union government withdrew the advisory notification related to cautioning people against sharing a photocopy of their Aadhaar card.

Reason for the Withdrawn Notification Notification:

  • The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), is the parent body of the UIDAI.
  • They had said that Aadhaar card holders only exercise “normal prudence” in using and sharing their Aadhaar numbers.
  • In the withdrawn notification, it has been said to use the Photo of with Mask in Aadhar at the place of using a photocopy of the Aadhaar card.
  • The Aadhaar identity authentication ecosystem has provided adequate features for protecting and safeguarding the identity and privacy of the Aadhaar holder.

Unique Identification Authority of India
  • Statutory Authority: The UIDAI is a statutory authority established on 12th July 2016 by the Government of India under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, following the provisions of the Aadhaar Act 2016.
  • The UIDAI was initially set up by the Government of India in January 2009, as an attach office under the aegis of the Planning Commission.
  • Mandate: The UIDAI is mandating to assign a 12-digit unique identification (UID) number (Aadhaar) to all the residents of India.
  • As of 31st October 2021, UIDAI had issued 131.68 crore Aadhaar numbers.

 

AADHAR Act 2016,

EligibilityEligibility

Every resident shall be authorize to obtain an Aadhaar number by submitting his demographic information and biometric information.

A “resident” means an individual who has residing in India for a period or periods amounting all to 182 days or more in the twelve months immediately preceding the date of application for enrolment.
