WHY IN THE NEWS?

Recently, New Space India Limited (NSIL) undertook the launch of INDIA’S GSAT-24 SATELLITE in its first “demand-driven” communication satellite mission post space sector reforms.

MAIN DETAILS:

  • Built by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) for NSIL, GSAT-24 is a 24-Ku band communication.
  • As part of space reforms announce in 2020,
  • NSIL was mandate to undertake operational satellite missions on a demand driven model.
  • Demand-driven’ mode basically means when satellite is launching, one will know who the end customers are going to be and,
  • What’s the kind of utilization and commitment so that you have very effective utilization of this satellite capacity once it goes into orbit.
  • New Space India Limited (NSIL), a CPSE under Department of Space,
  • Successfully undertook the launch of GSAT-24 communication satellite on-board Ariane-V (VA257 flight) from Kourou, French Guiana (South America).
  • GSAT-24 is a major step forward for NSIL in commercially meeting the DTH communication needs of the country using indigenously built satellite solutions from ISRO.
  • The entire satellite capacity on-board INDIA’S GSAT-24 SATELLITE will be lease to its committing customer Tata Play,
  • The DTH business of Tata Group, for meeting their DTH application needs.
  • The entire mission is fully funds by NSIL — satellite, launch, launch campaign, insurance, transportation, in-orbit maintenance and support.
  • Once the satellite is up in orbit, this will be fully own and operates by NSIL.

ABOUT NSIL

  • It is a commercial arm of ISRO established in 2019 under the administrative control of the Department of Space and registered under Company Act 2013.
  • Its primary responsibility is of enabling Indian industries to take up high technology space-related activities and is also responsible for the promotion and commercial exploitation of the products and services emanating from the Indian space program.
